GAUTRAIN MANAGEMENT AGENCY AWARDED FOR OUTSTANDING EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC SECTOR GOVERNANCE

The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has congratulated the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) for clinching the prestigious 2025 Integrated Reporting Award in the Public Sector category at the Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa (CGISA) Integrated Reporting Awards.


Hosted by CGISA in partnership with the JSE Limited, the awards have celebrated excellence in corporate reporting since 1956. They play a vital role in promoting accurate, transparent financial reporting and the full disclosure of all relevant information to stakeholders.


“This award cements GMA’s reputation as a beacon of excellence in public sector governance, financial accountability, and ethical administration. The Agency’s unwavering commitment to clean governance is evident in its remarkable achievement of maintaining an unbroken clean audit record for the 13th consecutive year,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.


Further underscoring GMA’s commitment to organisational excellence, earlier this year the Agency secured ISO certification for its Integrated Management System (IMS). The GMA is fully certified in Quality Management (ISO 9001), Environmental Management (ISO 14001), and Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001). These certifications, awarded by DQS in South Africa, reflect the Agency’s dedication to continuous improvement, risk mitigation, and world-class operational performance.


Echoing this sentiment, GMA Board Chairperson Professor Mfanelo Ntsobi praised the leadership and staff for their dedication. “This recognition is a testament to GMA’s disciplined and consistent approach to good corporate governance. As the Board, we take pride in the Agency’s transparency, accountability, and responsible management of public resources, values deeply embedded in every aspect of its operations.”


Since its establishment in 2006, the Gautrain Management Agency has played a critical role in managing, coordinating, and overseeing the Gautrain project through the implementation of the concession agreement between the Gauteng Provincial Government and the concessionaire. Additionally, GMA supports the provincial government in the roll-out of transport and rail-related projects.

FREE EYE CARE DRIVE RESTORES SIGHT FOR OVER 1200 RESIDENTS OF MARLBORO AND ALEXANDRA TOWNSHIP

A month-long temporary eye care facility at the Gautrain Marlboro Station has transformed the vision and lives of 1289 residents from Marlboro, Alexandra township, and surrounding communities.


The initiative, which closed its doors on Sunday, 26 October 2025, provided free comprehensive eye tests, prescription eyewear, and sunglasses to local residents. Launched on 4 October 2025, the project operated every Saturday and Sunday throughout October to mark World Sight Month and Transport Month.


A partnership between Gautrain, the African Eye Institute, and the University of Johannesburg, the initiative brought together experts, optometry students, and community partners to make quality eye care accessible to those who need it most.


“This initiative exemplifies the African Eye Institute’s unwavering commitment to reaching those most in need,” said Prof Khathutshelo Percy Mashige, Chairperson of the African Eye Institute. “Countless elderly individuals endure silent suffering due to vision loss, simply because they lack access to affordable eye tests and spectacles. By delivering essential eye care and health screenings directly to communities, particularly during World Sight Month and Transport Month, we are restoring not only sight, but also dignity, confidence, and independence. This is the true impact of collaboration: transforming lives through accessible, preventive, and compassionate eye healthcare.”


Optometry students from the University of Johannesburg were at the heart of the initiative, applying their classroom knowledge and gaining valuable practical experience while serving local residents.


Sipepiso Mhlope, Clinical Manager at the University of Johannesburg, said, “This partnership is a powerful testament to how academic efforts, through community service, can truly transform lives. By tackling avoidable vision issues, this initiative not only improves health and but also brings hope and new opportunities to hundreds of people.”


In addition to providing eye care, the facility also offered free HIV testing and blood pressure screenings in partnership with the Department of Health.


Gautrain Management Agency Chief Executive Officer, Tshepo Kgobe, commended the community for embracing the initiative and turning out in large numbers. “This initiative forms part of the Gautrain Social Investment Programme (SIP) and aligns with its Community Care focus area,” Kgobe said. “As Transport Month and World Sight Month draw to a close, we are proud that this collaboration has changed so many lives. By providing essential eye care services, we are supporting community members to participate fully in social, educational, and economic activities.”


The partners are exploring ways to expand the initiative to other Gautrain stations and communities, continuing their commitment to accessible, quality healthcare and community upliftment.

GAUTRAIN AND REA VAYA DRIVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT AWARENESS TO TACKLE TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK

In a bold move to tackle urban congestion and promote sustainable commuting, Gautrain, in partnership with Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, transformed a high-traffic intersection in Sandton today with a high-impact public transport activation as part of Transport Month.


Now in its second year, this campaign is an initiative by Gautrain, together with the Rea Vaya and A Re Yeng BRT systems, aiming to ignite change in how people travel and encourage motorists to shift to public transport.


“Traffic congestion is no longer just a freeway problem, it now starts right outside your front gate, with suburban gridlock delaying commuters before they even reach main roads,” said Tshepo Kgobe, CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency. “This highlights the urgent need for a modal shift to public transport to ease congestion and improve travel times.”


The campaign also serves to highlight the importance of integration between different modes of public transport to ensure accessibility, efficiency, and convenience. “To fast-track public transport integration, we have prioritised collaboration with various public transport providers, including A Re Yeng, Rea Vaya, and PRASA, and the Gautrain Midibus Service is a joint initiative with minibus taxi operators,” Kgobe added.


Lutando Maboza, Executive Director of Transport at the City of Johannesburg, emphasised this month’s vital reminder about the necessity of investing in sustainable, inclusive, and safe transport systems for a brighter, more connected future.


The City of Johannesburg's Transport Department has officially started working on its new Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan (CITP). This three-year project will outline how Johannesburg's transport system will develop, connect, and serve its residents over the next five years.


The CITP is more than just a plan; it's a comprehensive roadmap aimed at creating a better-connected Johannesburg. This initiative will integrate all modes of transport across the city’s seven regions, encompassing roads, buses, trains, cycling paths, and pedestrian routes. The goal is to ensure that every part of Johannesburg is interconnected through a transport network that prioritises safety, reliability, inclusivity, and sustainability.


Kgobe highlighted that affordability is a critical factor in encouraging public transport use. The Gautrain’s KlevaMova product, launched in May 2025, offers a 50% discount on train fares for individuals living in households with a combined annual income of R350 000 or less, students under 25, scholars, pensioners, and recipients of the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) disability grant. “Since its launch, 9500 individuals have applied to access KlevaMova and 5800 have been approved, expanding access to reliable public transport,” Kgobe added.


Beyond convenience, the public transport campaign highlights the environmental and lifestyle benefits of making the shift. Public transport users not only save on fuel, parking, and maintenance costs, but also contribute to cleaner air, reduced emissions, and improved personal wellbeing by reducing stress induced by traffic congestion and staying active through walking to and from stations or stops.


“This Transport Month, we are calling on all South Africans to be part of the solution by making the shift to integrated, sustainable, and reliable public transport,” Kgobe concluded.

In celebration of Transport Month, the Gautrain today hosted the activation event for its pioneering Art in Transit project at Sandton Station – a powerful initiative that positions the Gautrain system as a moving canvas for South African art, culture, and storytelling.


The Art in Transit project is designed to reimagine Gautrain spaces – from platforms to trains and buses – as vibrant, inclusive environments where all South Africans feel seen, inspired, and connected. By integrating curated visual and performance art across the network, the project seeks to enhance the passenger experience while reflecting the rich diversity, heritage, and creative spirit of our country.


To bring this vision to life, Gautrain has partnered with The Market Theatre Foundation, one of South Africa’s most respected cultural institutions, as a key and instrumental collaborator. With its deep roots in South African storytelling and a proud legacy of artistic excellence, The Market Theatre Foundation is uniquely positioned to help curate and deliver impactful, authentic art experiences within Gautrain spaces.


“Art in Transit is about more than aesthetics, it’s about transformation. This initiative signals our commitment to making Gautrain a space where people don’t just pass through, but where they pause, connect, and reflect. We’re proud to be leading this initiative and to have the Market Theatre Foundation as a central partner in this journey,” says Tshepo Kgobe, CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency.


The Market Theatre Foundation’s CEO, Tshiamo Mokgadi, hailed the partnership as historic, driving arts education while ensuring artistic mobility by moving South African artists into new spaces beyond galleries and theatres.


“The history of passenger rail in South Africa has always been intertwined with storytelling – each journey unfolding like a performance, with passengers as the cast. Through this partnership, we continue to imagine travel as narrative, where movement and meaning converge. The Market Theatre Foundation is honoured to collaborate with Gautrain, a world-class platform, on this culture-shifting initiative,” Mokgadi says.


As the The Market Theatre prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026, this partnership provides an opportunity to extend its legacy into new and dynamic public spaces. Today’s event at Sandton Station featured live performances, theatre, and a photographic exhibition, all curated by The Market Theatre Foundation’s business, turning the station into a stage pulsing with South African expression.


The project will be rolled out in phases across the Gautrain network, representing a powerful convergence of mobility, identity, and culture. Championed and supported by the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA), the CEO of the Authority, emphasised that reliable transport is essential for the tourism sector. “Whether international visitors are landing at O.R Tambo International Airport or local tourists are exploring the country, their entire experience depends on how easily they can move around,” says Dlamini. “This initiative by the Gautrain links well with our broader Gauteng Destination Beautification and Place Marketing Strategy, which seeks to activate urban and township spaces through visual storytelling and artistic expression, thereby fostering local pride, enhancing the aesthetic environment, and contributing to tourism development.


“This is just the beginning,” Kgobe says. “The Art in Transit Project signals a new chapter in how we experience public transport, not just as a means of getting from one place to another, but as a space for cultural expression, shared identity, and national pride. Through this initiative, the Gautrain becomes more than a train, it becomes a stage, a gallery, a mirror of who we are as South Africans,” he adds.

Gautrain is the Official Transport Partner for the DStv Delicious Festival powered by LottoStar taking place on 20 and 21 September 2025 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit


As one of South Africa’s most anticipated lifestyle events prepares to welcome thousands of visitors, Gautrain will ensure safe, convenient, and reliable transport to and from the festival.


Festivalgoers are encouraged to take the Gautrain to Midrand Station, where complimentary shuttle buses will operate at regular intervals throughout both days of the festival. These shuttles will provide direct and continuous transport between Midrand Station and the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, ensuring a smooth and stress-free connection for attendees.

The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) has once again demonstrated its steadfast commitment to clean governance and sound financial stewardship, achieving its 13th consecutive clean audit for the 2024/2025 financial year.


This significant milestone reinforces the GMA’s standing as a leading example of excellence in public sector governance, financial accountability, and ethical administration.


Speaking on behalf of the Board, GMA Board Chairperson, Professor Mfanelo Ntsobi, commended the Agency’s leadership and staff. “This achievement reflects the Gautrain Management Agency’s consistent and disciplined approach to financial management, and its unwavering commitment to clean administration. As the Board, we are proud of the Agency’s transparency, accountability, and responsible management of public resources, values that continue to underpin every aspect of its operations.”


Mandated to manage the Gautrain Project on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, the GMA continues to deliver strong operational performance. In the 2024/2025 reporting period, train service availability averaged 99.51%, while punctuality reached 97.57%, underscoring the Agency’s dedication to efficiency and reliability.


In a further demonstration of its pursuit of organisational excellence, the GMA secured ISO certification for its Integrated Management System (IMS). The Agency is now fully certified in Quality Management (ISO 9001), Environmental Management (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001). The certifications, awarded by DQS in South Africa, reflect the Agency’s dedication to continuous improvement, risk mitigation, and world-class operational performance.

GAUTRAIN AND PRASA TO RUN LATE-NIGHT TRAINS FOR SCORPION KINGS CONCERTGOERS

The Gautrain, in partnership with PRASA, will operate a late-night, integrated train service to ensure safe, seamless, and efficient travel for concertgoers attending the highly anticipated Scorpion Kings Live [with Friends] concert on Friday, 29 August 2025, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.


Event attendees can take the Gautrain to Pretoria Station, where they will be directed to PRASA trains travelling directly to Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The return journey will be just as seamless, with a late-night train service in place between Hatfield and Park Stations. The late night service will not run to Rhodesfield and O.R. Tambo International Airport.


Standard Gautrain fares, parking fees, and travel rules apply. The Gautrain’s R1-a-day parking promotion, available when you ride the train, is currently running until 31 October 2025.

GAUTRAIN AND PRASA JOIN FORCES TO DELIVER SEAMLESS MATCH-DAY TRANSPORT FOR RUGBY FANS

In a significant move towards transport integration and enhancing the fan experience, the Gautrain Management Agency has partnered with PRASA to provide a seamless, efficient train service for spectators attending the highly anticipated Rugby Championship clash between the Springboks and Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday, 16 August 2025.


Rugby supporters are encouraged to leave their cars behind and avoid the hassle of traffic by using the integrated train service. Fans can take the Gautrain to Park Station, and from there, hop on a PRASA train directly to the stadium. The return journey will be just as convenient, with trains running after the match to get fans home safely and efficiently. Standard Gautrain fares, parking fees, and travel rules apply.


“This collaboration with PRASA forms part of our broader efforts to create a more integrated, accessible public transport system, particularly for major sports, entertainment, and lifestyle events,” said Tshepo Kgobe, CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency. “With our parking fees at R1 a day when you ride the train, a promotion running until 31 October 2025, we urge all rugby fans to take advantage of this safe, convenient, and seamless service, and help ease the pressure on Johannesburg’s roads.”

The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) has proudly secured ISO certification for its Integrated Management System (IMS), demonstrating full compliance with internationally recognised standards in Quality (ISO 9001), Environmental Management (ISO 14001), and Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001), as certified by DQS in South Africa.


This milestone affirms GMA’s position as a forward-looking public entity committed to aligning its operations with global best practices in quality management, environmental sustainability, and the health and safety of its workforce and stakeholders.


The ISO certification also serves as a foundation for enhanced accountability, improved service delivery, and strengthened stakeholder confidence. It enables GMA to streamline its processes, reduce environmental impact, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, further positioning the agency as a model of effective and responsible public sector governance.


Speaking at the official certificate handover, Francois Labuschagne, CEO of DQS South Africa, highlighted the broader impact of the achievement. “This ISO certification supports 16 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a phenomenal accomplishment worthy of celebration, symbolising GMA’s contribution to sustainability and excellence,” he said.

GAUTRAIN EXTENDS MIDIBUS SERVICE ROUTES IN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH TAXI INDUSTRY

The Gautrain, in partnership with minibus taxi operators, is launching three new Gautrain Midibus Feeder and Distribution Service routes to Parkhurst, Summerset, and Halfway Gardens.


To create awareness and encourage usage, Gautrain will provide complimentary trips on the three newly launched routes for a limited time. Complimentary trips on the Rosebank Station to Parkhurst route will be available from 17 to 25 July 2025, while complimentary trips on the Midrand Station to Summerset and Halfway Gardens routes will run from 21 to 25 July 2025. Thereafter, passengers can use the Midibus Service by purchasing a ticket at an affordable R13 per trip. Midibus tickets can only be purchased at the departing Gautrain station, cash payments are not accepted. The service is currently only available during weekdays.


As part of the partnership, Gautrain transfers critical skills to its partners (i.e. taxi associations), supporting their continued growth in professionalism and service excellence. All drivers wear the official Gautrain uniform and receive comprehensive training in advanced and defensive driving, health and safety protocols, and customer service excellence. To ensure ongoing excellence, refresher courses are conducted annually.


The new routes are operated in partnership with Faraday Investment Holdings (FIH) and IPTA Gautrain Feeder Services (IGFS), which are entities of Faraday Taxi Association and Ivory Park Taxi Association respectively. Speaking about the newly launched Midrand routes, Mathews Mothotse, a representative of IPTA Gautrain Feeder Services (IGFS), described the initiative as a significant step towards integrated public transport. “We are excited about the launch of the long-awaited Midrand routes to Summerset and Halfway Gardens. This initiative will not only serve the community but also help feed many families. Our drivers are a good mix of youth, women and men who will transport commuters with professionalism and pride.”


Patrick Sifundza, a representative of Faraday Investment Holdings (FIH), the taxi association operating the Parkhurst route from Rosebank Station, described the partnership as the first step towards modernising and transforming the taxi industry at large. “We wish to emphasise that we are committed to ensuring that this project becomes a success and gains greater support from the community,” Sifundza said.


The Gautrain Midibus Feeder and Distribution Service addresses a number of issues, including enhancing the integration of the Gautrain system with other public transport services within the Province, improving accessibility to Gautrain stations, and reducing traffic congestion to the stations. With the launch of the new routes, the fleet now consists of 47 midibuses and two minibus (including wheelchair-accessible vehicles). “The Gautrain midibuses transport more than 78 000 commuters each month. The service has challenged the notion that the taxi industry cannot deliver scheduled, safe, and reliable services,” said Gautrain Management Agency Chief Executive Officer, Tshepo Kgobe.


Launched in 2011 and initially operating from Marlboro Station in partnership with Alexandra Transport Solutions (ATS), the Gautrain Midibus Service was later extended to include Centurion and Hatfield in partnership with Tshwane Taxi Industry (TTI) Shuttle Services. According to Kgobe, “the extension of the Midibus Service to Rosebank and Midrand Stations further reinforces Gautrain’s commitment to seamless integration across multiple modes of public transport through strong and mutually beneficial partnerships. Through the Midibus Feeder and Distribution Service, we have successfully created employment opportunities for 122 people, including 41 women and 37 youth,” said Kgobe.


Kgobe added that a dedicated driver rest facility is being constructed at Marlboro Station to accommodate the growing team of drivers and further enhance their comfort and wellbeing. Through our growing partnership with taxi operators, we are driving economic development and job creation by delivering efficient and reliable public transport services,” Kgobe concluded.

GAUTRAIN MARKS 15 YEARS OF OPERATIONS AND RAMPS UP EFFORTS TO BE MORE ACCESSIBLE

Fifteen years ago on this day (08 June 2010), the first Gautrain ride left Sandton Station for O.R. Tambo Station. Fifteen years on, South Africa’s first and only rapid rail network renowned for its efficiency, safety and convenience, is still on track and ramping up efforts to be more accessible.


Since its launch in 2010, the Gautrain project has successfully completed over 200 million passenger trips and employs approximately 1200 staff across operations and administration of the project. “In the next 15 years, we want to connect more people, more communities, and more cities in Gauteng, and stimulate economic growth, development, and job creation. As we mark 15 years of operations, we are mindful that accessibility and inclusivity is an imperative. To this end, we recently launched the KlevaMova Product which offers low-income earners a 50% discount on Gautrain train fares,” said Gautrain Management Agency CEO, Tshepo Kgobe.


Kgobe explained that KlevaMova will make the Gautrain more affordable for low-income and disadvantaged communities located on the periphery of cities and spending a significant portion of their income on commuting. The product caters for households with a combined household annual income of R350 000 or less, pensioners, and recipients of the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) disability grant. “A month after the launch of KlevaMova, we are pleased that approximately 2000 eligible passengers have registered for the product and over 1000 applications were approved following a verification process,” said Kgobe.


Scholars and students under the age of 25 also qualify for the 50% discount on Gautrain train fares. “As we mark Youth Month, we understand that safe and reliable transport enables learners to reach school safely and on time, minimising disruptions to their education. We are therefore positioning the Gautrain as the mobility of choice supporting young people's transition into adulthood, enabling them to access education and opportunities,” Kgobe indicated.


In many cities, transportation acts as a key driver for economic and social development, facilitating trade, improving accessibility, and creating opportunities for growth. Gauteng, the economic powerhouse of South Africa, experiences significant road traffic congestion and continues to draw people from all over the world and all over the country. “An efficient public transport system such as the Gautrain is central to the swift movement of people from one end of the province to the other,” said Kgobe.


“The role of the Gautrain as a catalyst for economic development cannot be minimised,” Kgobe said. Over the last 15 years, the positive multiplier effects of the Gautrain includes stimulating commercial and residential property development around the stations. “We have seen a significant proportion of commercial and residential properties mushrooming around Gautrain stations,” Kgobe indicated.


Kgobe added that the Gautrain’s 15 years of impact serves as a compelling argument for the proposed rapid rail extensions to areas such as Soweto, Fourways, Lanseria, and Mamelodi which is at the heart of government’s efforts to reverse the spatial inequalities left by apartheid, while ensuring inclusive connectivity. These proposed extensions are a key component of the 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan, which envisions a passenger rail network as the backbone of the province's modernised and integrated transport system.


Gauteng is the economic powerhouse of South Africa and when Gauteng grows, South Africa grows. The province, the smallest of the nine provinces, has an ever-increasing population whose mobility needs must be met, despite the congestion on our roads. This traffic congestion hinders not only mobility but affects our ability to grow our province. “We need to act now to move people from road to rail, particularly in congested areas like the Johannesburg-Pretoria corridor,” said Kgobe.


“The story of the Gautrain is interwoven into the growth of Gauteng, as the province grows, we strive to transport more people from all backgrounds and walks of life and in every corner of the province to places of work, leisure, business, or school. Fifteen years on, we pause to reflect on the journey we have travelled and the strides we have made, but also cast our eyes to a future where we can comprehensively address the transport needs of a diverse range of passengers and advance equity in transportation,” Kgobe concluded.

THIS WEEKEND, ELIGIBLE GAUTENG RESIDENTS CAN ENJOY FREE TRAVEL ON THE GAUTRAIN AND SIGN-UP FOR A 50% TRAIN DISCOUNT PRODUCT

The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has urged eligible Gauteng residents to sign-up for the newly launched KlevaMova Product which offers a 50% discount on Gautrain train fares. The Gautrain recently announced the special product which caters for individuals living in households with a combined household annual income of R350 000 or less, students under the age of 25, scholars, pensioners, and recipients of the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) disability grant.


“We are building a Gauteng that embraces all its communities, irrespective of their status in life. We want Gauteng to be connected and accessible, thereby allowing our residents access to opportunities they deserve while catalysing inclusive economic growth. I would like to encourage qualifying individuals to register for KlevaMova and experience an efficient, safe, and convenient public transport service. The Gautrain is opening its doors this weekend, 24 and 25 May 2025, and allowing pre-registered customers free travel on the train,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.


The free weekend special will allow an eligible individual to bring along up to three guests for this exclusive offer. Seats are limited, so individuals who wish to take-up the free travel offer must register at klevamovaweekend.gautrainalerts.co.za by no later than 21 May 2025.


Upon arrival at a Gautrain station on 24 and 25 May, eligible passengers will be received by a promoter who will verify that they are registered for the free travel promotion and issue them and their guests with a wristband which will allow them seamless free travel on the Gautrain for the day. In addition, the promoters will assist customers who wish to register for the KlevaMova 50% off train fare discount. “Eligible passengers do not only get to explore Gautrain for free on 24 and 25 May 2025, but also get an opportunity to sign-up for a product that will reduce their day-to-day train travel costs to work, school, or other destinations in the province,” MEC Diale-Tlabela continued.


The Gautrain’s KlevaMova product offers eligible passengers a 50% discount on train fares only, available as Weekly, Monthly and return trip products. To qualify for the discount, interested individuals must apply by submitting relevant documentation, and are subject to an approval and verification process.
